Hitachi was founded in 1910 as an electrical repair shop.

From the 1960s through to the 1980s, Hitachi had made consumer audio equipment such as portable radios and cassette recorders. They had established themselves as a value-priced brand of such equipment, but due to such equipment emanating from South Korea in significant quantities, their consumer-electronics focus had been on domestic video equipment.

Nowadays, Hitachi covers a huge number of business fields including medical systems and even defense systems.

High Performance Computing is only a bit of their large business which has a significant position in a semiconductor industry in general.
